The Spectrum Staff officially endorses Maura Healey for Massachusetts Governor. With a strong and lengthy background in civil rights, Healey makes a just candidate for governor. Born in New Hampshire, a graduate from Harvard, and an attendee to Northeastern, she has become an LGBTQ+ icon. During her career she challenged “DOMA,” The Defense of Marriage Act, which discriminated against same-sex couples, and has defended reproductive rights. When she won against John Miller in the Attorney General of Massachusetts race in 2014, she also became the first openly lesbian Attorney General in the United States. Opposing the Trump administration by attacking Title X and supporting the ACCESS Act, she has worked towards more progressive legislation and governmental regulations.
If elected she would make history again, being the first LGBTQ+ community member to become a governor in the U.S., and the first woman elected as governor in Massachusetts. During a time when Republicans and Democrats are scrambling for seats of power, her win would be a significant and well-deserved victory.
